Ralph, with all the cranking those pipes go through, you might want to make some sort of band to hold them close to the frame as a support. Might use hose clamps, any thing to take the load partially off the mounts. Too bad you can't support the silencers as well, that would probably help immensely. Just a thought or two for you to consider.

Ralph, I took your avatar picture and did some math. Those silencers weigh about 85 lbs at their extreme rear ends, figured zero weight at the pipe mount to the end of the silencer, with the weight getting higher exponentially. An aluminum silencer would drop the weight to 31 lbs, carbon fiber, 24 lbs, which isn't hard to manage.
You might try to find a way to cushion mount the silencers to the frame for now, if possible (CB400F, Triumph/BSA older 750 triples have their mufflers mounted like that), just to do two things, lighten the weight load off the end of the pipe and silencer, and dampen the movement of the metal in the stinger/silencer. That should help with the pipes cracking as well.
Just more stuff to work on.

Weight in lbs at the volume output point. In other words, how much the end of the silencer weighs sticking out the foot or so past the end of the bike. The more weight, the harder it is to support, and the more problems it causes on desmo's exhaust system. THAT excessive weight, if left as is, needs to be supported separately from the chamber itself, if it isn't shortened/lightened.
Obviously, a lighter and shorter silencer would be one heck of a lot more beneficial than the one he is now burdened with.

Desmocat:
I'm looking in my Nov/Dec '07 issue of Motorcycle Classics and that looks like you in the photo at the bottom right. The article is about Mid-Ohio. Looking good!
