The Weather Sucks......So I Might As Well....

Post by H2RICK »

try to move ahead with replacing Indy's tires and chain/sprockets. It's warm enough that I can work in the shed even if it is raining on and off, so that's a
nice bonus.
The front end has been pretty much finished since last week so I moved on to the rear today. A solid 7 hours of removing, cleaning, lubing, etc etc blah blah blah and everything is ready to go back together. I'll take the wheel to work tomorrow (my day off), strip off the old Super Speed and mount the new IRC Grand High Speed 4.00 x 18. Hopefully I'll be able to get everything back together by the end of tomorrow.......and then get her running. This is the absolute latest date that Indy has EVER been "de-winterized" in the ~20 seasons I've owned her.
Amazingly enough, all the wheel bearings are still good with the grease in the outboard rear drive hub bearing STILL in very good/clean condition. The clutch release mechanism, however, was on its last legs with regards to grease. Good thing I checked.
I'll be putting on a DID Oring rivet link chain along with the new sprockets. I could use the DID Dai-hard/NZ style heavy duty standard chain but I'm so pleased with the DID oring on my 650 that I figured why not use it on Indy too. It'll probably be the last chain she'll need....at least while I'm still able to ride her.

Well, it took ANOTHER full day to finish off the job, what with changing the tire and cutting/rivetting the chain and reassembling everything. It's a good thing I'm not doing this for a living anymore.
Sooooo.....Indy is ready to ride for another season.....and many seasons to come, what with all the new bits. Now I just have to find the limits on these new skins. I had the old Super Speed Bridgestones pretty much figured out but I'm assuming the new IRC's will be a LOT different in all regimes.
Well, we'll see....

I'm going to be following your lead, my 380 needs new tires and a chain. I'll check out the IRC Grand High Speed tires.
