Is suzuki in bad shape??

Post by jkevinlilly »

Is Suzuki in bad shape financially? I was buying parts at the a local shop this week and the parts guy there mentioned that due to sales slumps the past year or so that Suzuki is about as well off now as some of the car makers were last year and on the verge of fiscal collapse. Anybody know if there is any truth to this? If they go out the already poor supply of some of the parts for our old bikes may get a whole lot worse.

Tough to say really - here is a link to the 2009 financials, and over-all they did well - except for recreational vehicles where sales were down about 10% and they lost about $234 million USD. That isn't good, but at the same time also isn't really a lot of money for a company of their size - and for everyone anywhere doing business, 2009 was a tough year. Time will tell.

The trade mags show that Suzuki's motorcycle and ATV biz is generally down about 50% in the US from the 2007 high mark. I don't have figures for any other locales. They are the victim of the disappearance of disposable income in the US just like every other business that sells non-essential stuff.
I believe/believe they are in a faaarrrr better financial condition today than they were in 1977/78 when the RE5 almost broke the company.

Doesn't sound that bad. Sounds like it may just be typical workshop gossip.
