A revelation!!!

In my recent research of a new Koito bulb for my GT550, I found out that XS650's, use the same bulb, inner and outer trim ring, and mount bracket (bulb trim to outer trim).

I mentioned that my father in law had one sitting around, and everything matches. The buckets are different obviously.

I havent looked into part numbers yet, But FRom his light, and the Lot of parts I just bought for my 650 project, it all matches up. Im going to continue to dig into this for exact years and what-not.

Anyways, Thought I might contribute some knowledge to the board for once, instead of picking everyone else's brain. LOLOLOL

In that case, the halogen bulb kits that Mike's XS sells should work.

Just FYI. For anybody needing a 7" H4 motorcycle headlamp reflector, Candlepower is blowing out a Bosch unit for $21. They say they're part of an unclaimed manufacturing lot. Comes with rubber bulb boot but no bulb. I bought a couple of them, and they're really nice. I'm using a 45/45 watt H4 bulb, but it'll take any H4, if your charging system and wires can handle it.

Wow, Geez !!! That's an incredible price if those are the Bosch SBQ7s.
Hmmm...a guy can always use a couple of spares at that price. I run that light in my 550 and my KZ650. It's a must-have item, IMO, when compared to the lame stock unit....in either bike.

Sorry for not including the link. Yes, they're motorcycle-specific - it's printed on the glass. Candlepower's site tells more about them.

This premium genuine Bosch 7" (180mm) headlamp lens-reflector unit is DOT certified to the SAE J584 motorcycle headlamp standard, revision 76, for use throughout the United States, Canada, and all other countries where traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road and SAE/DOT headlamps are permitted or required. The reflector is Swedish; the lens and final assembly are German. Heat-compensating aluminum bulb seat, steel reflector, and hard glass lens. Includes silicone rubber seal boot.

Those are the dog's bollocks, Geez.
I see that the lens pattern is somewhat different from the SBQ7 unit meant for cages....but I wouldn't believe the average rider would notice the difference.
That is an OUTSTANDING price for a genuine Bosch reflector !!! :shock:

Am i missing something here?? the ad shows a motorcycle reflector yet the one you are holding Stu is a car one, so which one are they selling???

Allan,

you mentioned the fact that there are differences in design between car and M/c lenses which create different patterns.

I have used car lenses and bike lenses and it seems to me that there's more variation from one manufacturer to another than there is between car and bike patterns. The best I experienced was a car halogen in one of my old Triumph T100s.

Are there really significant differences we should be aware of, or is it more subtle than that?

Richard theres a lot of differences, the few i know of were mentioned already in regards to lamps for LHD versus RHD model cars. To add to this the manufacturers actually mark the lens 'motorcycle' which means a lot more is actually going on than first appears to the untrained eye.
Shine pattern in regards to distance and width etc will also be different than that of a car as well. I'm sure theres a performance data sheet as to just what all those subtle differences are between the car versus m/cycle types. I'm not saying the lamps for the car wont work, i'm simply saying it wont shine as well in all areas as well as one made for a motorcycle.
Suffice to say if Stu can get his hands on some of those 'motorcycle' reflectors as shown in the Candlepower website I'd be more than willing to buy at least two from him, however if they are the type he actually got in his pics, then I'm definately not interested in those car units.
By the way Suzuki do offer an H4 halogen motorcycle unit to fit the GT750 so they are still available.

I understand the left versus right dip issue, but the rest sounds like a subtle difference in light beam pattern.

You know me. I like to use the right thongs for the right reasons, but
I'd speculate that if we can't see a difference when we fit them to a bike, then it probably is academic in the real world. :wink:
