Thats the part that goes inside the carb slide that holds the throttle cable.

Well it's not on any carburetor I ever owned. Was this for the single carbs on the 72/3??

Yup it was, each carbs cable ferrule fits into the tall slot on the piece to hold the cable in position. The rack type carbs would not use these pieces since they had a linkage.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Yep, On the rack type carbs, the cables open the butterflies on a common axis. the slides are all operated by vacuum via diaphragms.

Those "thingies" are not easy to find but are easy to lose.
