are you suposed to oil k&n type air filters like pod filters or are they designed to run dry.

Mark, what are we talking about here ??
IF/IF you are talking about genuine K & N's, they USUALLY come pre-oiled from the factory. If they are not pre-oiled for some strange reason then, yes, oil them with genuine K & N oil ONLY.
OTOH, if you're talking about those lame Taiwanese knockoffs then, no, do NOT oil them. If you hold them up to the light and look through from inside to outside you'll see how flimsy the filtering material is. Oil will degrade it quite quickly. What the Taiwanese use for filtering is really an industrial strength PAPER TOWEL !!!! VERY low-rent, IMO.
