Dave and I discussed that and while it has some advantages, we decided that it was easier for anyone else following along to machine the shaft.

Well the second output shaft is completed, the bearing was machined as the previous photo showed, the seal hole has been machined and the bigger oil hole for the 1st gear has been altered and it fits perfectly.

Both GS output shafts finished, the upper one has had the bearing machined, the lower one has had the shaft flange machined.

Back at this again and now its nearly finished, the clutch shaft was cut down approx 4mms and i tapered the edge slightly. Then i cut back the splines by approx 2mms to allow the nut to seat a bit further up the shaft since the threads are now shorter.
Next up ,i cut in the rebate for the oil seal at the shafts end and finally cut down the inner clutch basket splines so they match the taper of the GS shaft.
Remember the GS shaft is a bit longer and the splines dont go back quite far enough so a little dressing of the inner basket makes it now clear perfectly.
I just need to clean up everything, dress some of the rough edges and make it have some finesse to its looks.

Image
Shaft end cut and ready for a little cleaning up.

Image
Cut into the rear splines of the inner basket, its a near perfect taper to the GS shaft.

Image
Ok thats it, we are nearly good to go, all but for the final going over and a wash and tidying up of all the parts.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

I really didnt think there was enough metal there to machine off to make up the 1.6mm that was needed removed , it looks like Allan proved that wrong so there's 2 methods to getting the bearings to line up with the case . I deleted my comment about thinking it wouldnt work  nice work Allan :D

Dave the good thing is the bearings have a really wide shoulder and if you look at the picture of the bearing even with the side cut away its still got loads of material left.
I did the alteration both ways and ill tell you now i prefer to cut the bearing than the shaft, plus its easier and faster.

No time to take them there yet, but I'm having the flange machined - not the bearing.

I needed a distraction this afternoon, so I dug out a couple of si speeds and am trying to work through the issues there. The two shafts are two mm further apart for a start and about 7mm wider, so that gets us off to a good start and then the gears are larger diameter so they won't work with the oil pump drive gear.

Other than that it's pretty much a straight swap.

Thanks mon!

Great vids, very informative. :P

I have a GS 'box, now all I need to do is find a machinist...

I'll send you some pics of gauges soon too.

'Mon' was deliberate - it sounds (to me anyway) like you've been living in the isles for a while now!

Oh the joys of being a muti-national person, however i was born here on the island, but trust me when i say i do not have a true Barbadian accent, thats a whole other kettle of fish if you heard it for yourself.
I was wondering if you had forgotten about those gauges Paul or decided to handle that task yourself, ok so i'll be waiting for them.

Allan,

Paul's an Aussie and he can take the piss out of any accent if he sets his mind to it.

I resemble that remark. :o
If you heard the way I sound, you'd understand why. :D

Richard, I sincerely hope you've maintained some 'Strine' since your departure from these shores. Don't forget to also drop a few 'struth!'s, 'stone the crows' or 'dry as a dead-dingo's donger' into conversation from time to time for me...

And Allan,

I've not forgotten about the gauges, just been a bit busy.

Will try to get pics out this weekend...

Cheers
Paul
