A friend of mine ran his thumb around the rear sprocket of a CB750. It killed the engine with his thumb about half-way around, and he was home alone. The only choice was to get the bike in neutral and roll it back out. He didn't lose his thumb, miraculously, but it's a good lesson to remember.

We were flooded on Memorial Day 1984. My 69 Triumph was submerged all the way to the handlebars. I was trying to back flush the oil lines to the head with some triclorothane I had gotten from work. I sucked the chemical up into a model airplane fuel bulb (4 oz's) and attached it to the oil line.. The oil / water combo was as thick as mud and I had to squeeze really hard. The bulb burst shooting the chemical into both eyes. I was instantly blinded and my eyes were on fire. I was alone and could not holler for help. I was certain I was blind.
Somehow I managed to make through the garage to the laundry room sink. There I forced my eyes open and flushed them with cold water for a good 10 minutes. My eyesight returned but both eyes felt like they were full of sand. Kind of like a weld arc burn if you have had the experience. Two days later and my eyes were fine.
I geuss the moral is to never let your guard down and try to think ahead in the 'what if' sense. Triclorothane was banned in the late 80's and we switched to tricloretheylene. That also has now been banned as both were found to be carcinogens. These super degreasers were necessary in our industry. They were used to remove all traces of grease, oil and fingerprints from the parts before hard surfacing. Any traces of the above and the overlay would lift off during the fusing process.

WOW....

I'm glad my main ride has a shaft drive (ST1100). I've never cleaned a chain drive while the engine is running, and seeing these pics, I NEVER WILL! Ouch!!!

I dont feel so good after seeing that...

From now on, I will never clean a chain...period. I will just sell the whole bike and get a new one.

So 'water cooled' drag racing where you are must pay very well to just buy a new bike at chain cleaning time. Tell you what, pay me half of what a new bike will cost. I will come to you house clean and lube your chain so you can keep your classic stroker and save you money and time looking for a new ride.

.....its possible I may have overstated myself in reaction to the image above.

I could never part with my GT750. We have been together too long....but not as long as I have been with my 10 fingers.

Someone posted elsewhere that those pictures were photoshopped...I dont know if they were or werent...I highly doubt it. Regardless, it sure left a lasting impression. Anyone that looks at that will think twice when they clean a chain or even get near one and I think thats what the author was trying to convey.

We all seem to know someone whos done this, i also know someone who got two of their finger tips clipped off on a bike chain. He did the same thing too, start it up on the centre stand and use a rag to wipe the chain off as it runs in first gear, then one little hook of the rag and in goes your hand.
I'd definitely give the award of the year for stupidity to anyone who does this procedure.
