and the plot thickens
So, now my oil pump has a mysterious leak. It is does not leak at all at idle nor when you rev the motor sitting still. I replaced the oil line from the tank to the pump and it still slings oil on the rear motor mount and battery which then covers the swingarm pivot right in fron of the rear tire.
What the heck? I checked tightness of all mounting screws. I just cannot figure out where it is coming from. degreased the whole area after line replacement till it was oil free and dry. Rode it again and new oil splashes/squirts in the exact same area.
can they be rebuilt? where to get parts if you can and approximate cost?
I am about to give up and let her sit till next year or part the thing out on ebay.

It could be as simple as one of the 'O' rings under the pump perished or split.
More likely is that it be coming out of the breather which is that tube to the left of the pump. When a transmission is overfilled it tends to puke out that breather pipe when the bike is in gear and running down the street.
Given that you have had gearbox oil issues, I'd get the bike nice and level and remove the level plug and the filler cap and let it sit for a while to dribble out. The level pug is in the clutch cover.

I had hair before I got this devil bike!!!
TZ, I will try the oil level trick. When I put in the new oil, I thought I was accurate with 2200ccs of it but maybe I screwed up. If thats not it, how hard are the o rings under the pump to replace and where do I get them from?
By the way guys, thank you all for your help and suggestions. I wouldnt know where to look or what to check if it wasnt for this fine group of enthusiasts !!!!!

I know its got to be hard to keep track of all the suggestions being run by you but i suggested when you first posted you put in 2200cc of oil to the tranny that you may have over filled it and needed to check the level http://www.motorcycleracer.net/phpBB2/v ... php?t=1803
the older i get the faster i was

Is it your 2-stroke oil or tranny oil, can you tell by the color? If it's the gear oil there could be trouble with the crank seals. A bad crank seal can blow tranny oil out the breather hole by the oil pump and it will run out the small hole behind the kickstarter lever. Over filling the trans will do it too.

ok, redrained and refilled. put a little less than manual says. when it stops raining, I will ride again. Oh, the new oil did have a small amount of metal flakes in it from just 10 miles of riding on new oil. So, there is something going on. It did however shift a little bit easier.
anyhow, going to ride it 50 or so miles this saturday and will recheck oil some time next week to see how much metal. Screw it, it either rides or it dont!
I am still going to take that guy up on his lower engine offer. I will be ready to do the swap over the winter or maybe sooner.

Don't be fooled into returning 2200cc's or any particular amount to the gearbox after a change of oil - and this goes for any vehicle, not just a GT750...
And, GT750's have a really neat tell-tale for how much oil is supposed to be in the gearbox - it's that weird, lonely bolt on the clutch cover.
Who'd have thunk it?

Remove that bolt. Pour oil in until it runs out that hole. Replace that bolt. Simple - you have enough.
All other vehicles have similar tell-tales i.e. glass windows, dip sticks etc etc.
The amount stamped on the cover or written in the manual is a guide, nothing more, nothing less. Take it with a grain of salt and use it to get a rough idea of how much you'll need (I mean, it will guide you to tell you how many bottles of oil to buy).
Unless the manufacturer releases a bulletin to say put more in, and as long as you have the engine level and/or the correct length dip stick, there will always be the correct amount of oil in there...
Now... dry sumps are a completely different kettle of fish, don't get me started!
Cheers

The transmission does take 2200cc for a complete fill, but with a drain and fill, not all the oil drains out, so adding 2.2l usually is about 100-200cc too much.
Actually Richard, I think 2200cc's is supposed to be the normal oil change amount - it's about 2500cc's for an overhaul?

It'll be in the manual, I'm sure...
Cheers

Chainsaw,
I check one of my motors which happens to be open on the bench and the gear that is responsible for 4th and 5th is a gear that slides on the input shaft. It slides right to engage 4th and right to engage 5th. It sounds like that gear has worn dogs and they may get worse over time, but can be repaired quite cost effectively.
If 4-5 is OK, then it's the two sets of 3 dogs that need some repair work eventually. Cutting those dogs down slightly would improve the shift and make it faster.

so, I did have the tranny overfilled! WHEEEWh !!! What a relief. unscrewed the lone plug by the clutch and let is sit till nothing come out. I even leaned it over a little to get it just a little underfilled, I mean just a tad. Rode it, rode it hard and nothing leaked
Seemed to shift a little easier. I am wondering (wishing mostly) if it sat for so long not being ridden that things may have gotten damp and a little rusty inside thus the hard shifting?? Doubt it but I can still hope!! LOL
anthow, riding it to my saturday work place (60 miles round trip) tomorrow. Will se how she does.
thanks for all the help guys!!!! Would be like a deer in the headlights without your input.

I did the same thing once with my 550. I could set it on the center stand and it did not leak. Set it on the sidestand and it dripped. Apparently there was just enough to much in the trans to cause a seep around a seal when the bike leaned. Same cure worked on mine also. Good luck on the trip.
