Finaly got myself a GT750

Post by elbert »

Picked up a 1976 GT750 today, it's in fairly good condition and very comfortable to drive compared to the T350 i already have. I will post pictures soon.
The only issue I have discovered is that the temperature gauge quickly goes to max, allthough the engine doesn't seem to be very hot, and there is almost no pressure in the cooling system when I push down the bleed knob on the radiator cap.
Could it just be the temp sensor or gauge? Is there a quick way to check theese items?
I will do a full flush of the system and give the bike a good service but need to get it home from my parents place first.

It sounds like the temp gage, water pump and thermostat are suspect. You'll have to check all of them.
If the water pump is dead, you better not ride it to far (2-3 miles), just to keep the temp down. When you drain it, I'm sure you'll eyeball all the passages for blockage too.

P.S. Just basic info for all water cooled engines.

Good deal on the New "old " bike :D for the temp gauge it sounds like there might be a short in the wires going to the gauge or the 2 wires on the back of the gauge are backwards .
the older i get the faster i was

+1 Dave. I'll bet the wires are reversed in the gage.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

Too many bikes, too much time, ENOUGH SPACE, FINALLY! Never enough money.........

I haven't had much time to work on the bike (or taking pictures), but it's not the wires that are switched.
The needle stays between just below the red area and slightly into the red area but the engine doesn't boil or in any other way seem to overheat, but what I found out is that the charging voltage is a bit high at 15 volts, (no wonder the light is so good on it) so I wonder if that might cause the temp gauge to show higher temperature than it should.
