Blowing fuse

Post by Helix »

Well on my way to work the bike cut out.
Pushed it home and discovered the fuse was blown.
Changed it and it did it again.

I have spent all night tracing wires all over the bike looking for some sort of rogue unshielded wire.

Has anyone had this issue, that can give me a few pointers

Helix.
The first place I would look is the fuse holder itself. If you are still using the original one, then replace it with a new one that takes the flat prong type fuses. Its amazing how many electrical problems trace back to that source.
My friend had an ongoing fuse problem on his 77 Buffalo, and we finally found a pinched wire in the temp guage behind the chrome cover. We found it when a whiff of smoke showed itself before it blew another fuse. After correcting that, it has never missed a beat since. That was 7 or 8 years ago. But, the original fuse holders do not age well, so that would be my first approach. Good luck with it, because electrical bugaboos can haunt you to insanity. Are you encouraged now? Cheers.

From jughead's post, I would not have any problems buying his reproduction parts. I would NOT however let him touch my bike. His assessment about the coat hanger wire, while absolutely correct, is not a safe and practical FIX for an electrical short. Maybe as a way to 'find' the smoking, sparking short itself I can live with.......

What id do is to check the red wire from the fuse holder right up to the socket on the harness side of the ignition switch first.
If you get continuity to ground using a meter on that wire your short is there. The trouble is youve now moved the wires so it may be off the spot it was touching to the frame. Still then, the short would be gone for now if thats the case.
Freds seen some fuse holders go bad so you can try a new one too if yours is old, it cant hurt to replace it anyway.

Jughead i guess a plastic coat hanger wont work as good huh???

Naw Allan Plastic don't carry as much Electrickery. Must be the Alloy they're made out of.

Should have Explained a Little Better.I just Realized that I hadn't Changed the Coat Hanger from the Gap (That was a Last Ditch Effort to ride since no one had a Fuse).I Realized it when I was Wiring in an Electronic flasher the other day to get my Turn signals working again.By all means DO NOT use Coat Hanger for Fuses. This also Applies to Barbed Wire,Aluminum Foil,Pennies and .22 Shells.

Really I am Kinda Anal Retentive about my Bike.Although my Bike isn't Perfect it is Really Pestering the Hell out of me.
