dip stick

Post by elbert »

On the old board someone described how they made a dip stick for the transmission from an old oil plug. I want to make one myself but what is the recomended way of fixing the dip stick to the plug so that it won't come loose?

The most efficient way is probably to drill a hole in the filler cap for the dipstick (steel or aluminum rod say 2.5 - 3.00 mm diameter.

push in the new dipstick and then cross dill with say a 1.0mm hole but not all teh way through. Push in a 1mm pin through the cap and through the rod and it should be 100% safe.

Crossdrilling sounds like a good idea, I was planning to use plastic since it would cause less damage if it loosens and gets into the transmission. But with crossdrilling I guess I should be safe anyway.

Gordon,

That sounds like the super safe mode, and since I have a spare plug I think I'll go for that one. It won't take much extra room in my tool kit...

I wonder if a cap with integral dipstick from another bike would work?

I made a dipstick from a plastic tie wrap, which was held by a cross-drilled pin. It worked.

If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

Too many bikes, too much time, ENOUGH SPACE, FINALLY! Never enough money.........
