Can anybody assist.
Tried to start my newly rebuilt engine today. At first not even a hint of it firing up. Tried to start on prime with choke on. Not a sniff. After a couple of hours it finally fired up 3 times but only for a few secs before cutting out. It now point blankly refuses to start. I am getting a spark. Carbs have been rebuilt with new seals etc. It dosent even sound likes it going to fire up.
Any ideas anybody?
I agree with checking for gas. It took a while for me to get fuel petcock and float levels sorted out. Any crud in the petcock screen? Transparent fuel lines make it easier to see whats going on. Plug wires wont matter because it uses a wasted spark system with one coil.
I also agree about the gas. I rebuilt my whole ignition system, and all along it was a choked 'y' fitting in the gas line. Put some clear line to a new 't' fitting, tested for flow off of the bike holding the lines to the carbs in the position they would be in if connected and turned it to 'prime' got good flow. Reconnected everything and she fired up!!! 90% of ignition problems are actually carb related, get a long flat blade screw driver and loosen the drain screw on each float bowel to see if any fuel is there. Make sure it flows alot, not a dribble. If it does, pull both carbs back off and double check float settings and all the jets are clear. Just for grins check that you have not swapped slides so the angled part is facing in, it should be facing out toward the airfilter housing. If you have one, check your compression too, this is a low compression engine so kicking it may not give you a 'too easy' feeling like a higher compression engine would. Even check the plug gap, too wide will not let it start either. My GT starts about three kicks cold, one hot, it is a little unusal to me but it gives no sign of trying to light off, it just all of a sudden runs. This is my first GT500 so I assume that is just how they are. But you are definitely in the right place to get great assistance, I speak from first hand, a great bunch of people here!!!!
Put a bug in 'bikegeezer, Dofin Fritts, and rngdng' ears, they have helped a lot with my GT500 too. Do watch for a plate under the clutch basket, the screws in it go into both upper and lower cases.
I did the tapered bearings on my GT500 too. I did not have to shave down the steering stem any, but I had to use a dremel to cut off the lower bearing race. Do get the tool from Coyote, it works great on the adjusting nut. These bearings make a world of difference.
Well, got almost all of the work done on this one (thank you Ron). I still need some trim things like a proper seat, the "Ram Air System" decal, paint (yes, the right side cover is silver) but it RUNS and is a scream to ride. I'm riding it around while finding the little trim things it needs. Oh man...
Also the tapered bearings stick out the top of the stem enough to make the headlight mounting ears fit loose on the forks. The fix is to go to the hardware store and buy two O-Rings that have a 35mm ID and a rather fat cross section and put one on top of each headlight mounting ear(between ear and bottom of upper triple tree.) When you tighten down the center stem nut, it will crush the O-ring and take up the slack and make the headlight mount tight again.
BE SURE YOU HAVE BOTH OF THE UPPER FORK PINCH BOLTS LOOSE BEFORE TIGHTENING THE CENTER STEM NUT.
I know this is kind of a random question, but has anyone ever tried to fit a Polaris snowmobile tach on a GT500? I'm looking for a less expensive option to the Scitsu tach for my racer project.
