Beadblasting question
The heads on my 500 have some white corrosion. I'd like to take them somewhere and have them media blasted (glass beads? walnut shells? soda?) but there's this thing that worries me. My Bultaco came with a spare head that the PO had bead blasted. The guy who did the work blasted everything, including the spark plug threads, the combustion chamber, and the gasket surface. He must have used a lot of air pressure because he cut it up pretty good (or I should say pretty bad).
What do you guys do to protect those areas when you have parts blasted? I don't want to have two more clean but useless heads.
Or am I worrying about nothing?

Generally, if it si cut up to much, he used material that was too course and/or too hard. Glass beads, walnut shells, even plastic beads will probably clean up what you are talking about. Soda may or may not work depending on how bad it is. I use finely crushed garnet a lot.
Fine sand will work OK if you stay back from the parts a little farther than normal.

I can repair those spark plug threads for you. And the gasket surface can be decked unless they guy dug divots in it. Let me know if you need that head fixed.

Can you tell me what a 36 tooth sprocket is meant to add/do?
I've just arrived at the sprocket end of my T500R during the rebuild and noticed that it is a 36 - 530. So, the PO must have read the aforementioned article also! As this is the only T500 I've ridden, I can't compare it's performance to the stock set up - semed to ride ok before the tear down (but then, I've only got a Kwaka Triple to compare it to
).
It will obviously be easier to just put this sprocket back on. But what am I missing/ gaining compared to the stock arrangement?
Thanks, Mike

Cable and Wiring routes - T500R
Can someone show me a pic of the cable routings for the T500R e.g. brake cable down between clocks or between the headlight arm and clock or...? etc
Also, which bunch of wires goes thru which hole in the headlight? The shell has two big holes, one above the other. I'm guessing the main wiring goes up thru the bottom hole. Does the light/indicator wire go thru the top one or bottom one and then into the shell?
Picky I know but I've spent so much time on it now - may as well get it all right.
Ta, Mike

Steering head bearings
While putting the steering head bearing back to together after cleaning and geasing, I dropped one of the balls! Fell on frame and.... ???
Anyway, they were in good shape. The top race that slides down on top of top bearings just starting to score ever so slightly so think may be ok. All else were great. Grease was hard and dried out.
Anyone know where I might get a replacement ball? Or, will I just have to try to find a complete bearing?

You would be better served to put in tapered roller bearings. It is an upgrade that almost everyone does to their old bikes. Kits are available for about $30 and they are much smoother that the loose balls and notched out races and most everyone trash cans the old ball bearing when they convert, so finding used ones may not be that easy.
