spec's???

Post by Admin »

It's nothing special, I wanted it to be reliable.

It has:

18" front aluminum rim.
34mm Mikuni carbs
Chambers are designed for a 8000rpm readline. I cut them up after a couple of races and tucked them in so close, that my feet rub long before the pipes touch down.
Ported to the "ol' reliable" numbers on Muzza's site.
Head shaved .040"
GT550 front disc that has been drilled (I'm thinking I may "thin" it as well)
Progressive springs front and back
I'm running the stock PEI system, but that may have to go
Stock swingarm with bronze bushings
Braced frame
The rearsets were made, as I said, from a set of broken Katana pegs I had lying around.
The gas tank is an RD350LC that I liked because of the knee dents. It mounts quite different from the T500, so I had to fabricate a bit.
The oil tank, in the tail, is from a t125 stinger.
When I built the bike, I put all new wheel bearings and a new tapered bearing

I used to have a small fairing number plate up front but it, and the tach, never survived the first race I did with it (don't ask, I don't remember it anyway  ) I want to get a 1/4 dunstall fairing for it.

The bike weighs about 275lbs dry, which is a bit of a problem since I weigh about that with gear on. I had double discs on the front, but found I was lifting the back end braking into a corner. So I took a disc off, figuring I had more brake than I could use.
Now if I ever get my billet heads designed, and made, I will also have a squishband.

You could always weld fill the heads. I do it a lot on the Kaws.......

weld fill heads

Post by Admin »

I considered weld filling the heads but have been cautioned against it on Suzuki's of that era. They were notorious for voids in the castings and also for cracking from the sparkplug out to the edge. The squish band that I would like to add is from the Muzza webpage, factory spec sheet. With that one the combustion chamber is so high that you would have to build up the top of the cylinder as well.

I'm hoping to resolve the wall thickness, and move the spark plug to the center. For the billet heads I will leave extra material on the bottom so that exact measurements of the squish band can be made, then a final cut can be faced and get them exact. The other challenge is to get pricing that will make the affordable. I'm sure that if I do them, I'll make plenty, so the price should come down.

Just finding the time seems to be the biggest issue (as usual).

The kaw heads crack too, at least the H2's do. Welding anneals the heads, which makes them softer. And does anyone have a pic of a combustion chamber they could post? The H1 heads are terrible, I drop the plug 12mm to where the electrode is within .030 of the piston. I will be redoing some H2 heads soon with a more modern shape soon. On the H1 the mod worked very well.

And I would guess Muzza has his site on his www button here.

So how about an update on how everyone's T500 roadracer project is going? Pic's too would be nice.

Need to get folks revved up about building these bikes, need to fill the Formula 500 grid at Mid-Ohio with T500's!!!

My T20 / X6 roadracer project

Post by Admin »

Newest project in the Shoemaker Vintage Racing garage is creating a 250GP racer. Since I race F-500 and F-Vintage and these races are always in the afternoon, I figured I needed to build a bike to race in the morning.

The non-running '65 T20 (X6) I have in my shed had once been a racer in it's former life, so it's a natural to bring it back to life and create a 250GP machine.

Plus seems like the 250GP grid is growing and I have local friends that race 250GP, so it's a natural fit.

I'm not going to go all out with the restoration like I did with my T500, this will be more like a budget racer.

I'll post pics as the project progresses.

AHRMA BBS Board gone.

Post by Admin »

Seems the AHRMA BBS board has gone down due to the talk about the lawsuit still in process. What a shame that such a good board is gone for AHRMA people and others to converse about one of the few good vintage racing orginazations.

I hope that maybe it will soon come back, maybe even in another form. :( :(

Cool! I had to turn down Lane on his invite to Barber this year... Would be interested in group pilgrimages to Roebling, Talladega, Carolina, or Barber... Just need enough notice to set up vacation at work...

Maybe a AHRMA Meet section added to the board...????

Will they allow a newb on GingerMan? I was hoping to get in on GingerMan and Gratten so that I can get on the grid at Mid Ohio (at least if all goes well).

Yes, if you have taken a race course and have a liscense. They may have a race school at each of these too. I will check. You will of course have to wear a nice orange vest.

Riders School near Grattan, Gingerman, Michigan

Post by Admin »

No new schedule yet, but with two races in Michigan they should be at both track I think. Contact them for the possibility and tell them Eric from Sundial Moto Sports sent ya.

Race frame questions

Post by Admin »

All,

Here's a couple of shots of the race frame I bought from Krash back in May and a couple of questions to go along with them.

First a side view:

Image

Then a close-up of the tank mount area:

Image

I understand the side tabs for mounting the tank to the frame like some of the Brit tanks back in the day but what the heck is the purpose of the square section tube pointing upward off the top frame tube? It looks like some sort of midevil torture device! Is this also a tank mount of some sort?

As for the side view, you can see the brake caliper set-up on the rear swing-arm. Zook-e told me in the past this frame had an RD400 rear wheel and ran at Daytona. Was this an AHRMA race or WERA? I read through the AHRMA rule book closely and they do allow rear discs but since the T500 never had a rear disc brake, would it pass tech inspection at Ohio?
