MIck Abbey Pipes

HI All

Has anyone had just pipes from Mick - or, as I suspect, does he only pair them with ported barrels? His reputation as a tuner is unsurpassed in UK from what I understand.

he does just sell pipes as well as tuning. if you talk to him, either by phone or on his fb page he'll always give you good advice. to tune or not to tune? just ask him

Mick kindly donated a set of pipes to a race build I am involved in. They were delivered welded longitudinally and all the cones nested within each other so the overall package was quite small.

Mick has a sound reputation as a tuner, and pipe fabricator. Finishing the welding and fitting the pipes to your bike is the tricky part, guys like Mick want the bike (with engine) to custom fit the pipes. So while it's there get him to port the barrels too

Thanks for the replies. My issue I think would be getting the bike up to Teeside and then back again (200 miles each way).
Getting some cones made-up sounds interesting I think i have enough skill to tack them together to work out the form before
taking to a proper welder @Zunspec4 - got any pics of your exhaust build?

Hi daxman,

Here's a photo of my initial effort at configuring an Abbey pipe to the T500 (my friend Gary May's build). Mick's pipe is on the right covered in 10 yards of duct tape as I experimented with positioning. The black pipe on the left is one we already had, notice how the header is sort of cranked rather than the smooth bend on the Abbey headers.

Mick Abbey did a set for my 550A about 4 years ago and they are very good. He made them as 'slip ons' as I had some knackered outer silencers which I cut the pipes off link here - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11247&hilit=earwig&start=30" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . They were just left as 'patchwork' originally and laquered, but started to show a bit ofspeckilg after being caught in a rainstorm, so I had the pipes, spannies and collars ceramic coated. He will do road, race or anything between. I went for mid range and he reckoned 20hp per pipe. I never got the bike on a dyno, and it's in rebuild now after a crank seal let go (and other things were tired too) but will be back on the road this year.
I can recommend Mick's work unreservedly - very professional - and a nice guy too.

Hi daxman,

Here is a set of TR500 pipes produced in the Netherlands by Cor Geraets. This kit was destined for the USA so I guess he has no problem supplying world wide. You can find him on Face Book, I don't think he has a web page. Sorry I don't know what Cor asks for his pipe kits.

Ooh they look nice, but if anything too nice for my 'survivor'... not sure I could justify the cost of those.

Hi daxman,

The pipe kit offered by Cor is quite comprehensive but you still have to weld it all together yourself, and that's the part which takes a fair bit of skill. They are also race pipes so you would need to lose your centre stand.

For fun I mocked-up a rough cardboard pipe from pizza boxes using the Gordon Jennings equations that are available on-line. I've read that they are somewhat out of date and no way optimised but the shape kinda looks like it should. Who knew the inside of a toilet roll was same diameter as the 250 down-pipe?

The plan is to switch to 'gaffer' tape for more durability.

Gaffer/Duct tape is like 'The Force' - it has a light side and a dark side, and holds the universe together.
