Please confirm: Is battery required to get a spark?

All to do with wiring, charging or just trying to figure out whats gone wrong.

My understanding is that battery is not required to get a spark.
Am I correct?

You are correct, on the GT500, it uses magneto, so no it does not use battery for spark.
