Hi again,
Just as a matter of interest does anyone know of a fool proof method of removing the old tank liner that is peeling off the inside of my 380 tank. The tank has had no fuel in for a good few years but as soon as I filled it up the problems started. The liner began coming away from the tank in great lumps with a layer of rust behind it. The liner has not softened it's just flaking off.
I've read online about a 3 stage approach which uses Caustic Soda, then Spirits of Salt, then Phosphoric Acid. The paint on the outside of the tank is good so I don't really want to damage it.

MEK will dissolve the tank liner. You will have to do it several times until the MEK comes out clean. You can get a head start by putting a couple of cups of drywall screws in the tank first and tumbling or shaking it for a while. Dump the screws and mess out and then start with the MEK. MEK will mess the paint up. Put the tank in a garbage bag and make a hole around the fill opening and tape it up good. After you get the failed liner out you start with acid to get rid of the rust.
