You shouldn't need to split cases, you will need to pull clutch cover, may need to pull clutch, remove shifter shaft from clutch side of gearbox, the spring is around shifter shaft.Check to be sure shifter shaft is free and not hanging up.

 When I change down the box from any upward gear the lever goes right down but if I lift it up with my boot it goes to the normal position and stays there? This happens on all downward changes but not on upward changes 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th which change as normal does this sound right for a broken gear change return spring? Thanks for your kind reply  Cheers Gavin

Sounds like a broken return spring is a possibility, especially if it started suddenly.
