GT 750 starter clutch axial play?

Hi experts,
As written in the subtitle i cant find info regarding this.

My question is, the big one way sprocket on the starter clutch that engages with the starter motor
- how much axial play is that suppose / allowed to have? And an i adjust it some how?

Mine have 1,1mm.....

Dont know if this is allowed, and you could ask why i am digging into this, well at idle i have a noise from somewhere behind left side engine covers, but everything is rebuilt - crank - bores - waterpump incl nylon gear - etc. And yes there's alot going on behind that cover, angle gear to the waterpump, starter clutch, ignition and so. Its my first Gt 750 so i dont know how much noise is suppose to come from there.

Additional information the bike have covered some 25000 miles from new.

I wish I had an answer for you, but I really don't know, and I removed my starter years ago.

I think there has to be a little play for the starter clutch to function. There are two different types. The early one has rollers and the later ones have a Borg Warner bearing. The early type is prone to wearing out the rollers which makes a knocking sound when the engine runs. I have never measured the axial play but 1.1 does seem a little excessive. The clutch basket and therefore the starter clutch are held on the shaft with a nut and held in place by a tab washer. Its possible the nut may have worked loose. I think a strip down of the clutch may be in order?

I, too, heard noise behind that LH cover and chose to replace the two needle roller bearings that the starter clutch rotates on. I couldn't get the sleeve / bush off the crankshaft so I didn't replace that. This did slightly reduce the axial play on the starter clutch and reduced (but did not totally eliminate) the noise. Its pretty quiet.
If yours is very noisy, it might be that the 3 countersunk screws on the back of the starter clutch are loose. Consider using a puller to remove it and have a look. Mine were not loose.
The clutch basket is of course under the RH cover. That really must not have much axial play or it'll whine noticeably on the drive gear. I had a GT550 which did this and it went totally silent when I swapped out a known good pair of pinion/clutch assy from a same model year bike (thanks Steve!).

Hi guys.

Thanks for your replies. Just to clearify things - i am not 100% sure the correct word is axial play, but the whole sprocket can move sideways the 1,1mm. I goes smooth and without no wobbels.

Bike is 1976 with the dobbel needlebearing if recon.

Thanks for your link, usefull info, but nothing about sideway movement so hoping for some other to come in with their battle.
