Would the front disc from a GT380 fit the GT550?

The GT250 & GT380 disc is smaller OD than the larger bikes.

Remember that a GS1000 twin pot caliper will fit a GT550/750 and the caliper on the 380 is the same as far as I know. Anyone confirm this?
That means that a GS caliper would make the single disc work better, but would need a different master cylinder - off a GT750, SV650 or Bandit for instance. Might be worth a try if you can get a caliper cheap and it does fit.
Other than that, you'd need to swap the forks and fit a twin disc setup if you need more brakes.

A Bandit / GSF master cylinder works GREAT with the standard caliper on the GT380, I can say from personal experience.

Gives loads more stopping power and feel at the lever, adjustable span lever too. I think the one I got was £20 delivered (an eBay auction win). Bolted straight on and doesn't look too obtrusive with the black-painted, square metal reservoir. It's a very effective and cheap upgrade.

Thats interesting - any particular model or year Bandit / GSF? maybe Bandit / GSF 250 and 400, late 80s / mid-90s?

I might try that. The 750 brakes are great, the single disc bikes OK-ish, and a bit more won't overpower the tyre.

Can you tell me the diameter of the piston of these GSF-???-master cylinder? Was this MC originally for a single or double disc brake? Is there a mounting thread for a mirror?

Hi Mike & Markus -

actually, you've made me remember, the master cylinder I fitted was from an early 90s Suzuki RF600, which explains why it was so cheap. However, I am fairly certain that the same part was used on the 1990s Bandits too.

I cannot remember what the piston diameter was, unfortunately. All I can tell you is that it worked perfectly with the standard GT380 caliper, improving the stopping power while needing less effort at the lever. I fitted it because the plastic reservoir on the original master cylinder started leaking.

I can't remember the piston diameter either, but if someone wants to do a search for refurb kits and post the info, then we'll all know........

I due course I may check out the part number and confirm what other bikes that m/cyl was fitted to. Shame it had no mirror thread as far as I can see.

If you get a 'new' master cylinder from a bike with fairing, it doesn't usually have mirror perches as mirrors are on the fairing, but naked bikes do as they don't have anywhere else to fasten mirrors.
