Hi Just did a maiden ride before the MOT tomorrow and the tachometer works great then when I put it into gear it drops to zero. put back in first an boom works again.

Isn't it driven off the clutch on that bike so if the clutch is pulled in - no tacho and no oil pump. Better check that with someone who knows those bikes better than I do.

For the T/GT500, you are correct. Also, the oil pump is driven in the same manner, so long periods of idle with the clutch pulled should be avoided.
(A good general riding tip, anyway. You should put the bike in neutral when sitting at a (long) stoplight. If the clutch cable breaks while in gear, you could lurch out into traffic.)

o, great. so all T500 and GTs do it then. another thing is when I was about to put the bike in the garage the revs just jumped up to 4-5K so I turned the ignition off still screaming, hit the kill, still screaming and got a wooden brush and pulled the plug leads ,,,,,,still screaming. how can a 2 stroke fire with no power?

It was dieseling. A slide sticking open a bit, or air leak, etc. can cause it.

If it's a Gt not a T, as in a later one with the electronic ignition, check the earth from the CDI unit hasn't come loose or isn't damaged.
I had the similar with my old GT after a rebuild, and had to whip the plug caps off to stop it, traced it back to that wire which needs to be well connected.
