Cylinder head temp gauge

Post by A.Holley »

Have just fitted a cylinder head temp gauge (Trail Tech) to my T500 and was wondering if anyone else has fitted one.
It's the type that uses a sensor under in place of the spark plug washer.
Any ideas of what sort of temps I should be seeing under normal running conditions?

I don't know what normal head temp is for a street bike, but I used a similar gauge back in my go-kart racing days (McCulloch 91B's). Normally I tried to keep the temp around 370 F. If it got up around around 400 the rings would start to go soft and the compression would suffer, but I could still finish the race.

One time I must have had an air leak because I couldn't richen it up enough to control the temperature. I just said the hell with it and kept going. I saw just over 500 before it stuck the piston.

Hope this helps.
