Points suck!

Post by bpeck27 »

After 38 years of resetting points and adjusting timing I've finally had enough! Has anybody out there fitted an aftermarket electronic ignition to a GT550? I'm ready to upgrade and my wife just asked me for the umpteenth time what I want for Christmas.

I just installed a power Dynamo electronic ignition on my t500. The exchange rates are very favorable so the price was good. Their website says your bike is 420 euros but after you sign up for an account, it takes off the VAT and also discounts it another 5% on top, if I recall correctly. I think I paid $320 for mine and it arrived in 4 days!. Yours would be more because of three cylinders versus two.

Hi I agree with you I had the same thought 15 years ago when I fitted a newtronic system which is specific to the GT 550. Easy to fit, great after sales

Had the points cover off maybe just once a year to check timing with a strobe. Always bang on!

Have the Newtonic system on both my GT750s & would definitely recommend them.

The plus for Accent is that the unit is self contained (everything is under the motor points cover).
Newtronic uses an external control box that you have to mount some place.

In a few months, I’ll be doing a motor rebuild for a GT550 cafe project & probably will install the Accent system as part of the rebuild.
