3 years ago I was nosing around the basement of my local Suzuki dealer, when I found a 71 t250 scrambler sitting in the corner with the top end disassembled. They told me the bike cost to much to repair for the owner,so there it sat for 35 years, last inspection expired in 73.
After 3 or 4 tries they agreed to sell it to me.So I rebuilt the top end and rode for 2 years.
This summer I noticed the right side pipe smoking quite a bit and my transmission oil level going down,so I decided to look for crank seals only to find the right seal obsolete.I stopped by my local dealer to check,he said they are obsolete, but had 5 in stock,so I bought 2.I have replaced the seal and so far so good.

Re: 71 t250 scrambler
Well today I took the bike for a 50 mile ride and it is still smoking out the right pipe.looks like I will being pulling the crank to replace the inner seals, since it appears the middle bearing is oiled from the transmission.

Bummer! Seals that have been in stock for 40+ years are likely to be marginal. The composition just doesn't last that long exposed to the environment.. Were the seals packaged? Did the packages have a bar code?
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Re: 71 t250 scrambler
Buy the others seals, soak one in diesel for a few days and try tgat. It will soften tge seal. Is the bike using clutch/gearbox oil? If not just give it a good spanking and it will clear. If a 2 stroke doesn't smoke, you have problems.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

Re: 71 t250 scrambler
when I bought the bike I was concerned about all the crank seals since the top end was off for 35 years.
my 77 gt250 has 3 seals and uses 2 stoke oil for all crank bearings,so I assumed the 71 was the same but it uses 4 seals, one on each side of the middle bearing so the only way it gets oil is from the gearbox, where I think my problem is going to be.
I am going to keep an eye on my gearbox oil and if it drops again I will start getting parts together.
