GT500 Winter rebuild

Post by NJRoaddawg »

I am going to strip down my 76 GT500 for a crank rebuild. Going to do pistons and rings while I am at it. Right now I am just gathering the part numbers for everything I know I will need and some for possible problems I may find when I open it up.

First question I have is regarding the Wiseco Pistons-they list T500 and GT750 pistons. Which is the correct one to order?
If I decide to go OEM on the pistons, I have noted 1.5mm and 2mm rings listed by Suzuki. Which is correct/Why ?

For those who have used Bill Bune for there Crank rebuilds. If he finds something other then seals need replacing when the Crank is pressed apart, will he source the parts and charge accordingly or will I have to source and then send them to him?

Just trying to get some ducks in order over the next month. I am "hoping" that its really just the crank seals that need fixing.
The bike starts easily but is drinking transmission fluid and will not hold an idle off of choke without continually blipping the throttle.

Thanks

If you don't go for Suzuki pistons (max oversize +1.5mm) you can get Wiseco and Wossner forged pistons or cast Mitaka pistons (cheaper). If using Suzuki I believe that there are 2 types (early and late) and the rings are different thicknesses. As most aftermarket piston kits come complete with pin/circlips/rings you should not have a problem. T/GT500 and GT750 pistons are interchangeable (remember though get the left & right 750 versions if fitting to a T/GT500). A good idea to also fit new small ends while you are at it.

Thanks, I had figured on the small ends also. Right now I would just be speculating as I don't have it apart yet. But I am
hoping for a simple hone on the top end and standard bore pistons. Bikes has approx 7700 miles on it with no unusual
noises. Seems fine except for drinking trans fluid like a thirsty guy in the desert. I do have a small leak in the injection lines somewhere
that I have not found yet. I figure I can worry about that once I break the bike down. I did manage to source an extra set
of injection lines several months ago if I can't repair what is on the bike. Also petcock started to drip so repair or replace as needed but nothing
else major on the bike that jumps out at me except for all the thing my imagination is telling I could do to this simple project that will run
into thousands of dollars and lots of time lol.

Stevebee: I saw the listing on the Wiseco site for both T500 and GT750 pistons. I did not call them to
see if they actually have them in stock, but they are listed.

The centre main bearing is lubricated with oil from the g/box. If it is drinking transmission oil you probably have a leaking seal.
