What gas tanks have folks used on T500's?

Post by old t500 »

Hi,
The tank on the '73 T500 I picked up was repaired in the past (both from the outside and lined), but leaks. The bike sat for 20 years too before I bought it. I've gotten a quote from a local gas tank/rad repair shop, and it's close to what I should be able to find another tank for, and they won't "guarantee" that it won't leak again.

So, I will take this as an opportunity to put a slightly longer tank on as this bike becomes a cafe styled machine.

What (other bikes') tanks have others used successfully on their T500's?

Lately I'm liking tanks with "knee cutouts", but that's not a must have.

What about these brand new fibreglass tanks that apparently are suitable for fuel that contains ethanol? Anyone have any experience with those?

Many thanks in advance

Glad to see another cafe 500 build being featured here. To be honest, you can make anything fit if you really want to. Men walked on the moon in 1969....if you get my meaning.
Things to bear in mind, are...handlebar clearance, if you plan to use drop bars, and a means of mounting at the rear, also clearance for fuel tap or taps. If you buy a fibre glass tank, (not a fan), I recommend Caswell sealing before use as a precaution, it's not cheap, but nor is a spoiled paint job.
Take a look at our Flickr gallery for some 500 cafe ideas.

If a 'glass tank is made from the correct resins, it won't need caswells or any other liner. It needs to be made from VINYL ESTER resin.

Jools is of course right...but we had an experience with the cafe bike in the header at the top of the page, (blue with a stripe).....which we built for a guy a few years back now...the tank was sold to us as ethanol proof, but in fact it wasn't, and the expensive paint job got spoiled when the paint bubbled after a few weeks.
Be careful !
