Mine are as tight as a German Virgin (Schneissentite), and probably as experienced in fending off the unwanted activities of a screw(driver). But they fit fine with jubilee clips.
I've dealt with (ex)virgins before........

If yours is on the right carb, the carb's in the wrong place.
If you look at the front of the carbs under the tops, there's a flat with the carb type and L, C or R.
The letter tells you where it fits. The carbs need to be in the correct places, as the centre jetting is usually different.
Looks like the PO wasn't as smart as he thought.........
I'm glad you mentioned this, Alan. Indeed, it's on the right bank. I'll take care of moving that back where it goes in good time. The carbs are a mess too. I think they were left with fuel in them. They are very corroded inside, not smooth at all. What a ball-buster it will be to get these straightened out, too. More $$ to sink into this one, for sure. :)

A good blast in an ultrasonic cleaner will sort the floatbowls.

Yeah, got to get one of those. My friend has one, a $5K model. But alas, it's for food grade coffee equipment.

I got one with a 'free' basket, and it has been very handy. 1.3 litre size is ok for most stuff - about 7"x6"x5" size.

I've looked at that model before and was exactly what I had in mind. I've seen these on YouTube. They look like they fit the bill nicely!

Your 74 jugs don't need the notch. Its better to buy reproduction carb rubbers as the rubber will be recently manufactured. I bought some NOS and they split within a week. Not surprising 42 year old rubber?

Yeah, they fit a lot more snugly and have more "flex" in them. I test fit one and it's seems much better. The only thing I noticed is the clamping rings aren't as beefy.

In defense of the notch, it does help keep the carb perpendicular with the engine (or parallel with the jug). Without them, they tend to want to twist sideways a bit, partly due to the pressure from the throttle cable coming in the top. They have to be REALLY tight to keep this from happening it seems.

I purchased some reproductions off of eBay. They don't have the notches in them like the originals. I think they will tighten up pretty good. We will have to see how it works out. I DO know, however that the diameter of the early head intake runners must be larger. On the original boots, the clamps are as tight as they will go right now (bottomed out against each end) and they still are loose

THESE appear to be model specific and its good they appear to know there IS a size difference in front and behind the carb
