Word of warning re: powder coating

Post by joolstacho »

Just a little thing to be aware of, I just had my GT500 frame powder coated. (At last I can start the build  ).
I masked off but didn't remove the swing arm fibre bushes.
It looks like the heat of the powder coating curing has slightly shrunk the fibre bushes. They are now a slightly looser fit in the swing arm, and the steel bushes which slide into the fibre bushes are tight in the fibre bushes. (The guy who did the coating said they cure at around 200 degrees C).
Nothing I can't fix with elbow-grease and careful fitting, but just a tip for anyone else doing the job.

Most powder coaters recommend solid bushes are removed.
I left the rubber pillion footrest/silencer hangers in on both 550s frames I had done without problem though.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

I anticipated and had no prob at all with rubber mountings such as the rear 'guard mounts at the rear of the GT500subframe, (which I didn't remove because I know what a bastard they are to replace).
No, it was specifically the fibre outer swing arm bushes shrinking with the heat that I wanted to give people the heads up on.

Yup, joolstacho is right!!!

I did the exact same thing. I didn't realize that those bushings were there (the match perfectly to the swing arm).

They got melted too with powercoating. Even the powercoat guy didn't see them. Ended up ordering some new ones (ebay).

Thing is that if you try to remove the bushes with drifts I think you'd have to pretty well destroy them to get them out, (being fibre).
And leaving them in will shrink them, rendering them useless anyway.
