In my opinion the best degreaser is also the most dangerous. That's plain old gasoline. It dissolves grease and grime and caked on oily dirt better than anything. Next to that is lacquer thinner. I'm sorry to say, absolutely nothing works like magic' All require brushing, elbow grease and time. The bio degradable cleaners are useless on heavy stuff and don't cut grease very well at all. They are OK for small light work but are useless in most other cases.
If you use gas, do it outside. I use lacquer thinner indoors, but it will give you a headache after a while .So get you a big pile of rags, paper towels and a good stiff cleaning brush. Don't expect to do it in an hour or two. I also use cheap acid brushes, The are really too soft so I cut off half the bristles to make them stiffer.
I see you are planning to use the drill and tap fix. I just hope the material is not too hard. If you succeed at drilling and tapping, be sure to use thread locker on the set screws. Backing out in use could be disastrous.

PC as it isn't, I agree. Gasoline is my favorite degreaser also.

If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

How different is diesel from kerosene? I used nearly a gallon of kerosene this last time. It worked (of sorts). Very slow and took repeated vigorous brushing

Nothing works like a lil' good ole elbow grease! Getting some good progress with the engine, its coming together. Pressed on the new bearing, cleaning up the engine block and having the starter gear being drilled out from a buddy who has a shop.

Thanks again to all of you rockstars who have been helping me with this. I really appreciate it!
When I put this back together does anyone have a liquid gasket that they could recommend for the crank cases? A lot of the ones I've googled seem to be head gasket sealers and are to repair ripped gaskets or to strengthen the existing gaskets.

Threebond (I think 1215 type but someone will be along) grey - applied to one face only.

The Three Bond incarnation I have is 1184. It replaced 1104 due to politically incorrect chemicals. It works.

Diesel penetrates better and lubes at the same time.Coyote wrote:How different is diesel from kerosene? I used nearly a gallon of kerosene this last time. It worked (of sorts). Very slow and took repeated vigorous brushing
Gives better gas mileage in tractor powered vehicles too!

Re: Bought my first 2 stroke - started for a bit & now doesn
Thanks for the quick replies, I'm finally getting closer to having it back together. I have a question about the kickstarter gear. I want to make sure its placed properly before I put the cases back together. I attached two pictures of its placement in the crank but something seems off? Can anyone point me in the right direction...I've looked at the diagrams and pictures but it doesn't really show how the gears get placed.

Hope to get this beauty up and running to enjoy some of the riding season soon!
Thanks again all

Re: Bought my first 2 stroke - started for a bit & now doesn
Hey all! I finally got back to this build and I had it running for a bit. but then she died on me again. I have a fully charged battery, new plugs and I tested compression this go around after changing the pistons and rings and its around 100psi without the throttle wide open...I may have screwed this up but I bought a honing kit and cleaned the bores myself. I then bought standard pistons and rings and they seemed to have some play in the cylinder bores with the rings. Now the key holes and all were placed correctly but I have a feeling that I may have the wrong size pistons and they may be to small....How much play should there be? I bought the standard set of pistons, not the larger ones and installed correctly.
Any insight would be super helpful.

Look into the inspection and repair section for wear tolerances http://www.oldjapanesebikes.com/mraxl_G ... /index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .. piston and ring end gap .. etc
the older i get the faster i was

Re: Bought my first 2 stroke - started for a bit & now doesn
I doubt you could run it with the wrong sized pistons as I believe they'd be 0.5mm too small if the motor was on first oversize. If its not be rebored then stock pistons / rings are fine provided its still within tolerance on clearances. What did it sound like when running?
100psi is too low. What happens to compressions if first you pop 5ml of two stroke oil down the plug holes? if they jump to say 120psi then yes its worn out. If not, I wonder at the gauge's accuracy.

Re: Bought my first 2 stroke - started for a bit & now doesn
I'm doing the oil trick tomorrow to see and to be honest it sounds like crap when started. There's to much of a end gap with the rings when they pistons are in. I've never re-bored this but who knows what the PO did to this poor bike. The bore size is about 61.5mm and the pistons and rings that were supposed to fit seem about .50mm to small so it may be the 1st oversize.
Should the piston be able to move left to right in the cylinder bore? Right now I can see over a mm gap in the piston ring so I'm assuming that's the issue. If this is a previous bore situation, would I have to check the correct angles were ground down at the exhaust and intake manifold? If the piston and rings are the 1st oversize obviously. Specifically these below

Also, very random but how the heck do you put that headlight together??? I took it apart and those springs popped out and then when I put it back together it doesn't stay, the springs end up popping it off the casing again and I'm assuming there's something simple I'm missing...
