+1 on that plus many, many profanities. The 550 is the same on the base nuts. Due to the down tubes on the frame, the front pair are right swines!
On the head nuts you need to select sockets carefully as some are too long to permit a ratchet to fit under the frame tube. A trip to a tool shop might be in order.
Cheers!
Mike

Re: GT 380 J strange engine sound
Thanks for the advice Mike and Craig!
I got them off half a degree at a time.
Next up is putting the cylinders back on...any special tricks to doing this..squeezing the rings etc?

The trick to reinstalling the cylinders is - go slowly and gently. The 380 makes it easy because there is a generous taper at the bottom of the cylinders.
Put a generous smear of 2-stroke oil around the cylinder walls with your finger, especially around the bottom end of the cylinders. Put on your new base gasket and make sure the little hole for the oil injection system is present, and that the hole is over the little brass tube at the rear of the crankcase mouth.
Find where the ring pegs are on the pistons, and then position the piston ring gaps over the pegs. Now, with one hand (fingers pointing UP), grip & squeeze the piston rings into the piston from each side (that is, over the wrist pin holes). With the other hand, push the cylinder onto the piston crown. The piston will engage and should slide smoothly into the cylinder.
When you cannot see the piston rings any more, it's in. Lower the cylinder onto the studs, and tighten the nuts hand tight. Check the piston moves smoothly in the cylinder using the kickstarter (be careful with the other two pistons while you do this).
All good? Tighten base nuts, then repeat two more times

+1 what Craig said.
I've done 380, 550 and 750 and, compared with the uniblock 750, the aircooled ones are very easy. One at a time

Re: GT 380 J strange engine sound
Seems to to running better now..was easy to put back together. It still makes kind of a funny noise. Everything on the top end looked good however. I will take it for a test ride this week and see how it does. : )))))
