This ain't good ... extra parts

Post by Whit »

Found this very thin washer on my workbench. Engine is already bolted and ready to go in frame.

Anyone have any idea where this goes? //Pat

I think I lucked out. After looking through parts that I have not put on yet and comparing to parts book, it seems like this is a thrush washer for the neutral switch. Must have stuck on the engine when I pulled the neutral switch off. I will sleep better tonight. //Pat

Not sure but it looks like it could be #16 on the back side of the clutch basket http://www.oldjapanesebikes.com/mraxl_G ... lutch.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Shim? I don't recall ever seeing one of those. That's odd. In fact I have two transmissions on the bench and both clutch drums have a lot of side play.

I wondered if that washer might be from the starter idler gear shaft but the diameter is too large. I think you're right about it being a transmission shim.

It really does look like the washer on the clutch, but I am certain I put that washer in because I used the same picture to put it back on that Suzukidave posted. The reason I went back to the book for the clutch was I also bought the engine rebuild DVD and that part was a lot different than my 1973. My 1973 does not have the clutch bearings the later models have. //Pat

Correct. The bearing design changed for the M 76 model. Earlier ones used a bush and later ones a needle roller.

I still don't recall seeing a "thim" behind that bevel washer. The odd thing is that I have two clutches and gear shafts on the bench and both have excessive play allowing the clutch drum to float. I need to check into that and see what's going on there. If you don't need that washer/shim I may have to come over and borrow it. :wink:

I just checked the part number and that shim is used on a long list of Suzukis, and it only costs a couple of bucks. I may just have to buy a couple.

Started up the motor for the first time today. I get occasional noise from clutch area which disappears when pulling in the clutch. I think Suzuki Dave is right that my extra shim goes to the clutch. Would like to drive it a couple of hundred miles before repairing this. Is this critical to fix over the next 200 miles or should I fix it now. Thanks //Pat

Could be part no. 09160-40001. Thrust washer for the shift drum. Dimensions are 40X45X1 mm.

If it is the thrust washer for the shift drum, what kind of problems am I likely to see with it missing? //Pat
