Why Does GT500 have Two Axle Nuts?

Why Does GT500 have Two Axle Nuts?

Put on a new chain today. I see two concentric nuts on the left side of the axle-one larger and one smaller. The smaller nut is castellated for a cotter pin.

The larger nut tightens against the swingarm. The smaller nut tightens the axle.

There's a torque spec in the manual for the castellated axle nut but not for the bigger nut. Does it have a tightening spec, and what does it do, anyway?

The second nut allows you to remove the rear wheel without disturbing the chain.
Just makes it a little easier & neater to service the rear tire -- the chain doesn't end up in the dirt if you are fixing a flat while on the road.

A nice touch, much like removing the front wheel with the bike on the center stand causes the weight to shift to the rear wheel.
If only the engineers were as thoughtful when they designed the intake boots & a few of the other annoyances.


Sorry, I don't think I've ever seen the torque spec for the nut.

Tighten till firm. +/- 10% :up:

Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense. :clap:
I guess it would be difficult to over tighten the big nut since it pulls the sprocket spacer hard against the inside of the swing arm. So, snug but not crazy tight and don't strip the threads...
