whinning gears??

Post by johnakay »

a customer has just bought a T500k.
gears whine a bit in 4th/5th gear at around 3,00 revs is this an indication of worn gears??
I've told him to do a couple of hundred miles (still got fresh oil in)
and drain it and check for bits or metal particals.
I've also advise about the little drain screw and that he needs 1400cc and not as marked 1200cc. rgds john

Most likely the gears are on there way out, the whining starts off slowly and as the wear increases, the noise will get louder. The K model should have had the oil dam mod and have 1400 cc's in the tranny. The oil dam mod is not a guarantee that 4th/5th gear won't wear out. Have taken apart numerous 74/75's with the mod installed and found 5th gear totally shot.

I thought the oil dam mod was for post the K model. I recently had to do my 73 K.

I have 5 or 6 "K" model engines and non of them has higher cast oil dam. It definitely started with "L".
I had made the same experience as Bloop2.

What causes the actual whining noise on T500 boxes? Is it because the case-hardening on the gear teeth is being worn off by the insufficient lubrication, and the gears don't mesh neatly anymore? Or is it the gearbox bearings wearing out?

as I understand it ,lack of lubrication cause the case hardening to wear off.
once that gone the gears wear wear out pretty quick.
having a higher wall and an extra 200cc of oil is suppose to eliminate that problem.
whether it does or not????
