GT 380 Drilling small end

Post by bazit »

Hi
Would drilling the small end of the con rod help in getting more oil to the bearing ,if so what size hole and best position to drill.
Any help or advice would be great.

No.

Suzuki tiples are fed oil through the CCI system ie under low pressure to the main bearings and through the slingers to the big ends almost like a 4 stroke. That's the same way that Honda fed oil through their roller bearing street bike cranks with a centrifugal slinger.

Yamaha twins by comparison inject oil into the inlet tract like pre-mix and on those motors, slots are essential. On a Suzuki triple that will not help at all.

Have you had small end problems before? They're pretty robust providing the gudgeon and conrod eye are not scored or damaged, and the CCI system makes sure they get enough oil.

Having said that, they are cheap enough to replace automatically if you ever remove the top end.

Hi
I have had no small end problems and the reason for the drilling had come about after reading an article (cant remember where ) that improving the lubrication to the small end can be achieved by drilling the aforementioned hole .
From comments I would probably not drill the hole now.
Thanks for the response

Duh. You said SMALL end and I managed to miss that. At the small end, in theory a slot or drilling might add more lubrication but they don't seem to need it. I'd leave them alone
