GT 750 Oil Leak

Hey guys
I am new to this forum, but here it goes. I have a 1972 GT 750 some what restored. Last year riding I seen that oil was leaking from the vent hole on the bottom of the water pump cover. After doing some research I ordered a new water pump from a online dealer. It is a OEM Suzuki part. Installed new pump last week and was fine. Came out this morning, and oil on the floor. I hadn't rode it yet so I put my pipes back on and took it for a spin. Came back, parked it for a hour and there is that oil drip again. Any Ideas ? HELP.

Hi,strange that you still have a problem after replacing the water pump ? did you split the cases,or take the old one out from the bottom,did you lubricate the mechanical seal on the end of the shaft on installation I've never done a pump,but have read a bit,sometimes it takes a little while for the sealing ring to settle in apparently are you sure about this being a "new leak" or is the oil now coming from somewhere else,gear box drain plug,gear box detent bolt,or oil from leaking gear indicator switch

No I didn't spit the case. I pulled pump out the bottom. I have been gone for a few days. I am hoping to get time to look at it this week end. I will take a good look at the gear shift indicater. I just don't no any place else it could be coming from. Thanks will let you no on my outcome.

Hi Larry, I believe you should wash the entire engine with a good degreaser and like roger said check the neutral indicator switch and trans case plugs for leaks. Probably ought to remove the chain sprocket cover and clean that area really good. You'll be surprised of all the gunk behind that cover. It doesn't take but just a small piece of road trash between the chain/sprocket and neutral switch to break it. After you get her good and clean, take it for a ride and check it out. If the crank seal/s went bad, you will possibly see oil pushed out of a breather under the oil pump cover or where ever oil could be pushed out. Bad crank seals can cause the trans and gear case to become pressurized from leaking combustion pushing past the crank seals. Can you tell if it is definitely transmission oil???

No, I am retired from fillmore co highway dept. About 3 years now. Ridge Runner was a name I picked out back in 1972 when I bought this bike new. Hopefully I'll get achance to look into my oil leak a little more today. Thanks for the responses.

Something worth checking, Larry. Make sure you have a crush washer on your oil drain plug. Through out the years people lose them or never had one installed to begin with. I had a similar leak to yours and wasn't quite sure where it was coming from. I noticed if I slightly nudged the drain bolt tighter every few weeks it would stop, but reoccur. It never stopped completely until I added a crush washer.

Just an update of what I've found with my oil leak. First of all I still have a small leak from the pump weep hole, and maybe that's exceptable. I did find loose screws on neutral switch Which stopped a lot of my leak. One more leak I found is from the right side clutch adj cover. There is a small round seal inside the cover which I think is the culprit. I am haveing trouble finding this seal in the parts brake down. Anyone have a part number for that seal? Thanks for all your help.

I bought my GT550L new in 1974! I think I only put about 8,000 miles on her last year. 3,000 of those in one week, riding down to Deals Gap and back!! Going to do the trip again this August and put a few more miles on her for her 40th. anniversary!!
Is it oil or coolant leaking out of the weep hole? My GT750A had a coolant leak last year. Turned out to be one of the o rings had a twist in it! A lot of work and aggravation for a simple installation brain fart!!

I didn't know oil could leak from the water pump. Can someone describe to me things to look for in diagnosing a water pump ? If I take the cover off what can I look for as far as a pump in need of a change.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
Well after a new water pump, snugging up neutral switch bolts, installed new oil seal in clutch adj cover I think we got it. Took it out for a little spin today, (about 20 miles) parked it on cement floor in garage. Five hours later, guess what, NO OIL LEAKS. Not a drop. Long time coming, but well worth waiting for. Thanks again to everyone who gave me there expertise.
