1973 t 500 petcock replacement
Anyone know of a cheaper way to replace a petcock on a 73 t 500 other than buying a new one from mukuni for 400? Any help is appreciated.

Yep.....search for petrol tap adapter on ebay, and you can fit a basic tap with the use of one of these adapters.....

Re: 1973 t 500 petcock replacement
Pingel has a vacuum petcock that fits -- have one on my T500. Currently is around $170 on Amazon.com
It has to be turned 90 degrees from the usual mounting direction because of interference between the vacuum chamber & the frame.
Occasionally NOS T500 petcocks show up on eBay & sometimes go for reasonable $$$.
If you are ok with a manual petcock then there are some much cheaper alternatives.

As JAB says....some cheap taps are available if you're not worried about a vacuum option. Just remember to turn it off........
Search taps on ebay......or maybe petrol stopcocks on your side of the pond, and there are loads of them. You'll do the whole job for 15 dollars.........
