What do you mean "magneto" is that points and side cover they are mounted in or something else?

on the left side of the motor where the alternator is there is a large metal piece. i have heard it called a magneto, i assumed thats what it was. is it called something else?

On a GT750 the alternator is on the left and consists of a rotor on the crank and a stator mounted to the crankcases. Is it the stator that you are calling the Magneto by any chance. Do you have a picture of the part?
