The plastic ones from Suzuki are still not available in the USA for some reason, although are available here in Canada and most other countries. Has anyone in the US actually asked to have the part number reinstated ? Just seems odd.

Hi Ian,what are your thoughts on the gear being made out of anything "but" plastic ?
I thought the reason why they are made of plastic in the first place was that if there was a problem anywhere else & things stopped turning the plastic gear would shear first....protecting other metal components from damage....just a thought

I actually suspect a ballistic nylon gear will last longer than an aluminium one from a wear perspective, and will be quieter. And given all the other gears are cast iron, or steel I'm pretty sure if things did stop that the teeth would fly off that aluminium gear faster than a politician can make promises.

Having said that - I will be installing a locally made aluminium gear that I've had for a while into my test mule machine (the blue 1976A) as I'm currently rebuilding the engine anyway due to a seal failure. I'll let you know if it causes problems !

It is still in the bike, but it is noisy. It was made locally by a machine shop called Cactus Machine, however the owner and the guy who actually made the gears (Roy Hansen) passed away recently and the place is harder to deal with as it is changing hands.

My personal recommendation would be to stick with the nylon gear as they are available from Suzuki and are cheap - I'm not sure there is any real advantage, other than the fact they look cool, to the aluminium ones.
