Need general information from old car guys.

I came across a very rare opportunity today. There was a guy in his 70's billboard advertising at my local grocery store a 1950 Chevrolet Powerglide Deluxe. Do any of you guys remember these ? Anyhow, the car supposedly sat for several years indoors. The guy wanting to sell it, did a quick restoration rattle can paint job on it. Repaired brakes, changed fluids, etc. He was very honest and showed me original pictures prior to the paint. Prior it was in good condition for it's age, but had rust on the front and rear bumpers. So, he painted those portions a cheap silver. Supposedly, it had motor work done prior to him obtaining it. Which I tend to believe because the car starts easily and purs like a kitten. It starts and idles very well, has a descent looking red rattle can paint job and the interior is above fair condition. Everything else works on the car. The guy was originally asking only $2,500 for it. I talked him down to $2,200 and he agreed. But, told him I'd pay within the next day or 2. Just for the fact that it runs good, I think it's worth that. The body, floors and trunk is solid with no apparent rust issues anywhere. I'm not much of a car guy. But, I was thinking what the hell. Drive around in a 1950 classic time to time for a few years and perhaps sell it after. Thinking I may just be able to make a couple grand off of it. Another cool selling feature about the car I would think. From what I understand, it was the first year and model that any American manufacturer sold an automatic. Please, share your thoughts or anything you may know about this car. This is how it sits today.

I think you should buy the car, put a hitch on it and tow your 2-stroke down to the Gap in May.

Looks like a bargain to me as long as you don't spend 20 grand restoring to make it into an 18 grand car.

Yeah, I can't afford to sink that kind of money into it. Maybe one day, if I don't sell it sooner. I'll make an attempt to paint it will quality paint myself. Being that most experienced painters would likely want 5 grand to paint it. I remember when I was younger. It was quite common to get a car painted for several hundred to a grand. Those days or gone, greed rules the world now. I think Im gonna pull the trigger on buying it today. Just need to figure out where Im gonna keep it.

Nah, don't need a trailer hitch. There's enough trunk space to stick the Buffalo inside.

I'm somewhat familiar with older cars, as I used to drag race out at old Keystone raceway which is now Pittsburgh Raceway Park. Looks like the car is worth $2000 if the undercarriage isnt rotted. Check body to frame mounts. As for trying to make some money later on the deal, I wouldnt bet on that. If it was a 2 door maybe, but a 4 door I doubt it. The popular Chevy's from the era would be the 55-57, the 1950-54 while nice just are not as desireable to collectors/drag racers/hobbists/flippers. Just my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth. My recommendation is buy the car and enjoy driving it.

Looks like a stinking bargain to me.......if it's solid, £1500 gbp for such a lovely old classic sounds like nothing. If you are stuck for somewhere to keep it Pearl, I have room at mine !

Get it .. they have those shows on the tube all the time .. they buy a old car for 500$ and turn right around and sell them for like $20,000

I bought it. Now I just have to figure out where to keep it. The seller is going to give me some time to figure it out. I took several more pics of it before I left. Don't plan to put much money in it, if at all. I think I'm just gonna enjoy it as is. For the price I paid for it, it was very hard to walk away from it. The motor was completely rebuilt. Top and bottom. This will be last toy for a very long time.

The PO can either keep the antique registration plate or give it to you. If he gives it to you, you will need a "letter of release for the plate".

Looks pretty good! Definately worth the pick up price. Have fun! BTW If you need some parts I know of a couple of junkyards somewhat near you that have older vehicles.

Yes, it's an inline 6. I had a couple of those motors in Ford pickups back in the early to mid 90's. They are good motors. Easy to work on and not known as problematic motors. Low on power though. I haven't driven this car yet. But, I don't expect much when I do. Because, previously owning straight 6's and I know the car is heavy.
