Only 42.9HP for that 550? Must be tuned poorly.. :? With chambers and hi flow air filters like he has I'd expect much higher numbers. Isn't a stock 550 supposed to put out 48HP?? :?:

Some horse power is lost in transmission, and it is an old bike.....I'm not sure, but I don't think even a healthy 550 made 50hp, so 42/43 is probably not too bad a show.

Phil Schilling wrote and article years ago where they grabbed a GT550 and ran it on teh dynop and gave it a service and tried some minor tweaks.

As road tested it was about 32hp. The used one ran 31.87hp and after tune up it was around 37.5-37.9hp. One raod test in 72 had it at around 34hp.

42.9 is not bad for chambers but no porting or other significant changes.

38 must have been the number I assumed was stock then, not 48. :wth:

That's a cool write-up and interesting experiment on tune-ups. Looks like I will be shooting for something around the 43HP mark once I get my 550 all buttoned up and finished!
