What type of exhaust are these?

I've just seen these pipes go for sale (or actually the whole bike, but going to persuade the owner to sell me the pipes ;))

anybody recognize them? I'm thinking allspeed? Are they any good?

According to earlier posts these pipes are powerfull but with a short bandwidth, how bad is this? If I can get them should I? How do they compare to other pipes?
The bike was already sold when I rang the guy 10mins ago, but he sold it to a guy who wanted the engine for a sidecar. So the seller passed on my number and now its a waiting game;)

They do indeed look like J&R and they do have a horrible short powerband, but that can be changed if you don't mind a little cutting and welding. The header is too long. and that means minor reshaping to make it all fit.

As mentioned, they are J&R Power Pipes.

Because the pipes are slim and the cone angles are shallow, they work well for road use but will not give you any extra power at the top end, as the others above have said, the bike will stop revving at the redline, if not a little earlier.

I have a set of these on my GT380 and they work really well for the road, giving a useful power boost from 4,500 to 7,500rpm but they don't extend the rev range.

Are they worth the bother then? Welding and chopping was probably going to happen anyway, I don't think they would fit around my 180 wide rear tire ;)

If I were to shorten them, what kind of gains would I see compared to stock? I'm afraid the seller might value them a bit too high so I need to know if I should buy them of what I should offer him.

As long as they are really cheap, they are worth buying. If the seller wants a lot for them, you would be better off making your own pipes from scratch.

For most of us that is not an option, but we know that you have made two sets of pipes already, so the decision for you may be different than for the rest of us.

To me they would be worth less than 200 dollars because I'm not a great welder and rolling cones is a pain in the neck, so they have some value, but because they have to be modified they don't have a lot of value. To you it comes down to cash or time. Both are limited resources, but you can probably work out which is more limited. For example if you save the cash, you can spend it on something else like food or rent of beer or maybe it will pay for a welder to weld the pipes after you roll them and tack them up.

The biggest problem with J&R pipes I think is that they are too long and it's possible to shorten the header pipes and re-angle the cones to make them fit, but the pipe will always be peaky. A better idea is to make the pipe you want.

So, I just got off the phone with the new owner and he want 350 euros for them. According to him the chrome is in good condition and it has removable header pipes, bit like T500 pipes. He actually thought they might be T500 front pipes.

350 euros might be a bit much for me, but he's sending me pictures tomorrow so I can see the state of the chrome. If they really are as good as he says it might be oke, but it's still a bit much.

Building a set of pipes from scratch is definitely doable, and as you said, I've done it before, but it's a lot of work and getting them to fit properly and staying in 1 piece is a LOT of work, way more involved than just welding a bunch of steel together.

And then there's the issue of doing all that hard work and then having the pipes not perform.

That's true but so was the EFI a lot of work with no guarantee of success. Do you still have the first set of pipes that you created? If so, send me the dimensions and I'll see if anything from them can be re-used with some modification.

350 Euros is not a huge saving over a new set of JEMCo or Higgspeed pipes. We know that JEMCo work better than J&R for most people.

I would think the condition of the chrome would be irrelevant if you are going to cut and weld. That plus chrome is not weldable so it has to be ground off everywhere you need to weld.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

According to TZ375 I can shorten the header pipes and smoothen the otherwise peaky power output. This would mean no welding except for maybe an hanger on the back?

The seller emailed me these pictures, saying that the chrome looks good and is probably saveable. Too bad it's such a low res picture I can hardly see they're even exhaust :roll:
