Re: GT550 budget build
Judging by the size, I'd say they're to the starter motor.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

Looks like extra ground connections .Cragdog wrote:For the presumed starter wires this is a picture of there origin. Looks like they are just under this bolt.

Maybe the connection to the neutral switch located right by the front sprocket .Cragdog wrote:And there was this small blue one that comes off the alternator, not sure why it's cut or what it went to. I can't seem to account for it in the wiring diagram.

Re: GT550 budget build
I thought that was the gear indicator unit under the front sprocket? I'll have to take a look at it when I get home, but if I remember all the wires from that were accounted for and attached. I can't seem to pinpoint this stray blue wire on my diagram or the one you've posted. Looks like the neutral switch is integrated into the alternator? Kind of hard to tell from that diagram.Suzukidave wrote:Maybe the connection to the neutral switch located right by the front sprocket .Cragdog wrote:And there was this small blue one that comes off the alternator, not sure why it's cut or what it went to. This does make it look like its the connector for the neutral switch http://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-1977-1972- ... c9&vxp=mtr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: GT550 budget build
Okay, so this thread shed a little light on the switch. Sounds like only 72 had a true "neutral switch" whereas 73 onward had a gear position switch which incorporated the neutral wire (which is likely the one I've been questioning). viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7155
Now I'm wondering if the stator unit I put on ( I have several) was possibly from a 72 bike used on a later model where the gear indicator switch incorporates the neutral position, hence it being cut.. Not really sure, I'm gonna have to take a closer look at the gear indicator when I get a chance.

Ah .. your 550 has the gear readout on the dash .. so the neutral wire would be in the bundle going from the sender making the blue one extra like you think .

Precisely what I am thinking! Thanks for putting my mind on the right track. I will take a look after work and determine for sure if that is the case, insulate that stray blue wire and call it good.

Re: GT550 budget build
Spot on - the 550B loom from the alternator still included a blue wire which went to an unused slot on the connector on the electrical panel.

Re: GT550 budget build
Went out on Tuesday to take 20 laps around Irwindale speedway in a stock car. Was one of the funnest things I've done in a while!

I need to get a new terminal for the positive battery cable connection. Looks like the PO just splayed out some coppers and tightened them to the post.

Can these ground wires go anywhere on the frame? Or is there a specific placement for them that is best suited?

Re: GT550 budget build
Bear with me on this... But I assume this is the attachment for the "pri" petcock position am I right? If so, does anyone know how it works? It seems to draw fuel only into the middle and right side carbs which is strange because it is the left and middle carbs that have the choke plungers.. (still don't understand why only 2 of the 3 carbs get choked on a cold start)

Anyway, when I attached the carbs to the engine the other day I wanted to get some gas in there so I hooked up the main fuel line on the other side to a small gas reservoir and same thing to this "pri" one, but whenever I would pour gas down this line it just came spewing out of the middle carb here:

All three carbs have been rebuilt with the keyster sets. New jets, gaskets, washers etc. and cleaned up pretty good.
