GT550 520 chain conversion

Post by motorpsycho »

First off..... Hi, my name is Scott and I have a motorcycle addiction......
Been lurking for awhile now while building my current project GT550, however I've run into a slight snag.
The bike is going the custom route with the front end being from a GSXR600.
Currently working on swingarm swap and am in need of a front sprocket that will fit a 520 chain.
I did a search already, but seems the like for the chain conversion guide has expired?
I've thought about putting the stocker on the surface grinder, but Id rather just have an off the shelf part to make future replacement easier.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great forum BTW!

I understand the GS550 swing arm and (disc) rear wheel fit and are in line. I got those parts for my next resto and they do fit, but not permanent yet.
There will be issues with thicker chain on the cases and chain guard.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

520 is thinner.

So it is, I didn't know that.

THIS (clicky) seems an interesting site about chains.

Perhaps I need to clarify.....
Looking for a direct fit front sprocket that will allow me to run a 520 chain.

Thanks!

I have never seen an aftermarket 520 front sprocket or rear sprocket for that matter for the GT's. I've never found 525 conversions either. They make some very strong 520 drive chains for modern bikes today. But, unfortunately the stronger 520 components of today were not available when these bikes were produced. You would have to have the sprockets machined. Which probably would cost too much and not worth that conversion. Not saying that someone out there doesn't make them. But, I have looked very closely for sometime and never found them. I think the problem with that lies within the sprockets. These bikes are very heavy. Meaning the 520 sprockets would have to be made of steel. A steel 520 sprocket would be eatin alive give the GT's weight. Where modern bikes weigh much less and modern 520 sprockets can with stand being made of lighter materials being the modern bikes weigh much less even though they have more power. The modern 520 chain would not be a problem, but modern 520 sprockets on a much heavier bike would be. I think that's why no one ventures into making 520 sprockets for these bikes. A perfect example of what I am referring to is cruisers. Much heavier bikes, with less power. But, still require a 530 drive train because of the weight. Power isn't the main factor.
