LH crank seal? 74 GT 750

Post by T350guy »

I installed my GOOD Octopus oil line and go for a test ride.( been having heavy smoke issues on left side )
The left side bellowed smoke which slowly dissipated somewhat after a few miles.
After about 10 miles both sides were running not bad, still slightly smoking but OK.
Stop to see a friend for a few minutes and leave with smoke bellowing out again..2 miles later it kinda clears but still smoking more than usual.
Once home I checked the trans oil and discovered it was down about a quart and a half.
There is NO crank blow by at all.
Like most 2 strokes will replacing the RH outer crank seal solve this? Edit ..Looks like it won't
I know the Gentleman that rebuilt the motor and he would have used New Seals so this has me puzzled.
Should note when home I looked at the exhaust and the Left side still smokes slightly more than the rest..weird

Pulled the 3 plugs and all running a very nice tan and my Wife noted it wasn't smoking when coming down the road to the house.
Edit
It would seem ALL new seals were installed according to the previous owner.

Edit
Just fired the bike up and the LH exhaust is smoking excessive while the RH and Middle are clean.
Still trying to find a good photo of the starter clutch housing to see if Oil is in that Housing and if so it maybe be the LH crank seal..cause really what else would cause this?

I don't have any experience with the crank seals, but is it possible that seal is installed a*s backward?
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

That's unlikely because the seal on that side has a recess for the washer.

I cannot imagine having enough oil in the bottom end to get up as far as the crank. I don't think it's anywhere close to that high is it?

I would do a leakdown test and double test the octopus check valves. It is possible that the excess smoke on that side is just a build up in the pipe that is taking a long time to burn off.

The octopus I have on it now did not leak when it sat on the bench or leaked when the pump was installed. My other one did and you could see the oil moving about 2 inches a day .
Out for a long ride today with some funky results. will post later after I have a look at things

My disappearance of trans oil may have been when I hit the deer back in July as the bike was on it's side with the crankcase pointing upwards.
So today we head out for a ride ..not bad so far but then it starts to bellow and smokes heavy out the left side.Through out the 100 mile ride it would run not bad to unexpected fogging and even at a stop sign the smoke passed us.
On the way home it seem to run not badly.
Checked trans oil and it hadn't changed .
I turned the pump right down and go for a ride..fogging yet..Ok Get her good an hot ..still heavy when accelerating..Only left side..Once home the RH and middle are smoking but very little , the left a fair bit more.
So now I'm thinking oil pump.
Going to mark my oil tank as I feel it is using way too much.
