Depends on a few variables. One being how often you ride ? Two, how you ride ? Three, how far is your pump turned up ? Using modern oil you will find that you have to clean a lot of parts quite often if your pump is turned up what I consider to be far. A lot of idling or slow cruising also contributes to oil build up. But, a lot of guys will argue that your pump needs to be dialed in according to specifications using an oil from 40 years ago. They're quite easy to check, learn from your own settings and riding habits how often you specifically need to check those things. The more often you remove them. The easier it should be to remove and clean them in the future. The packing would need replaced or at least rewired when it's starting to stretch too much and become too loose. Otherwise, it should last for an extremely long time if it's wired tight enough.

:? Hi,depends mainly on how the bikes used, putter around town,& oil sludge will build up quickly & performance will suffer greatly, long trips, high speed helps greatly,as does a good dose of revs in the lower gears to burn off any residue. You can never get them totally oil/carbon free,I take mine out every 5,000kms & give them a clean with a propane burner, taken care not to get them to hot. Also a good thing to remove them every so often to make sure they don't get stuck in there with crud & carbon build up.The pipes themselves,I remove yearly & clean out with a caustic/cold water mix, note safety procedures necessary!!! PS I never worry about re packing with the white wrap stuff, first thing I do with "new" baffles is remove the wadding, just something else to give you a restriction, they also sound better without it...

ok... good notes.

i dont put tons of miles on it. but also not pushing it very hard. pipes have only been on for 8 months. so i assume theyre good for a bit. probably pull them out in a month or so just to keep things free. thanks guys.

In that case, I'd probably add it to the list of jobs to do between riding seasons
