Well, I finally collected the race motor. The "Race Ready" example I bought only need a replacement set of c/cases, all my NOS gear box spares, a bunch of gaskets and two new bearings in the g/box. Oh well, unless I care to become a felon there's not much I can do about it :D .

Image

Engine bolted in and trial fitting the weird looking pipes (which allegedly match the porting :? ). The positive news is the pipes do not (at this stage) seem to need the major surgery I thought they would. Now to get it finally assembled and down to a dyno to see if it makes more than stock power (or less :D )

Onward and staggering upward

Almost there and it's looking good. Those are big pipes for sure. It will be interesting to see how it performs on the dyno.

Looking like a race bike for sure! Where did you get the chambers from .....looks like they are hydro formed.

Hi CJ,

The pipes were apparently made specifically for the porting on this engine and I bought them with the engine. Yep, they are hydro-formed and despite thinking I was going to have to cut'an shut to get them fitted they appear to mount well (they were made for a different frame). I will need to relocate the hanger bracket and also rig a 2nd mount as you need a 3 point mounting to pass scrutineering (Header, mid & end mountings)

Geoff where did you get the shock nut spools for the race stand? Did you have them made?

Hello Ralph,

I had my tame machinist make them for me, but I cribbed the idea from Minnovation Racing who make them commercially. The spools are integral with a 12mm o.d./8mm i.d. bush to match the 12mm i.d. mounts on the swinging arm/shock. As it happens the way my pipes mount they will hit the spools so they are going to have to be removed and std. 12mm bolts used instead. Then I have to figure another way to hitch the paddock stand, never ends does it :D .

When I ditch the spools they are going to be surplus, so free to a good home

Geoff,

You state you are going to use 38mm Mikuni carburetors. Have you fitted up these carbs to the barrels to make sure the larger carb bodies will clear the case on left side? On my TR500 I've used 36mm carbs and have milled the intake ports to be parallel with bores which angle the carbs upwards, permitting clearance. I think the standard carburetor mounting will only permit using 34mm bodies.

Hello Ralph,

I plan to use set of custom carb-barrel adapters made by Pete Odell, with a rubber boot in between from Allen's (a UK Mikuni distributor). I was not anticipating any clearance problems, but that might be an example of famous last words :D
I will post photos of my success or failure.

there are no clearance problems if carbs are at correct angle, but as Geoff knows I dont think the 38's will work well with the porting in the barrels.

We can always change the porting, Pete :D Got those manifolds in the post yet ?

I have been doing some more fiddling about, this time seeing how the fairing might fit.

This thing is actually starting to look like a racer, not too far away from having a go at starting it (probably a couple of months, but hey)

The carb manifolds are having a trial fit. I still need to cut some gaskets and address the slight mis-match at the barrel interface (still pondering that one). Nice product, well made and fit the stud spacing to a T (although I will use the allan bolts shown, with suitable locking wire arrangement)

Placing the carbs against the stubs I should have no issues with clearance between the carbs and casing. The inlet rubbers and throttle cables are on their way from Allans ( http://www.allensperformance.co.uk/index.html ). I have had my paddock stand bobbins modified to provide clearance to the pipes so I will use them now. All that is left is finally deciding where the pipe hangers need to go and have them welded and then it will be PETROL time :D :D :D

Cheers for now

The Seeley saw a bit of sunshine this afternoon. Not much left to do before running up and down the road trying to bump start the bugger, heart attacks caused by unusual physical activity permitting.
