On Any Sunday

Post by celt_rock »

In case you're a Netflix subscriber you should check out On Any Sunday... I'm sure most of you already own the
Director's cut DVD that you can buy from Mert Lawwill's website or Malcolm Smith's site

I had never seen this before, it was filmed a couple years before I was even born and I stumbled upon it just the
other day. Instant 70's nostalgia hit and I wanted nothing more than to go back and watch these amazing riders
ride live and in person. Tremendous amount of skill and daring what those guys did back in those days and this
film seemed to capture it very well.

A little heavy on the Triumphs, BSAs and even Harleys (due in large part to Lawwill... though oddly enough you see
him breaking down more often than not in the film... go figure... makes me proud of my Sportster  ) but there
are a few Yamahas and Suzukis sprinkled in here and there.

Anyone know of any other films from the same era available out there? I would LOVE to find full races. I know they
were filmed by the networks, wonder if they've ever been released? I'll have fun looking... cheers!

This little gem of a documentary was posted on here a few weeks back, but is WELL worth pointing out again: Barry Sheene's ill-fated Daytona 1975 trip. Worked out pretty good for Gene Romero, however ... contains heavy 2-stroke content

Thanks for that! Never saw it but it has spawned 2 nights of heavy YouTube patronage at my house.

Man I miss the 70's.

Agreed, that's got to be one of the best motorcycle documentaries ever made. And I wasn't even around until the 80's. :)

There's also a part 2 out there but it doesn't really pack the same punch as the first one.
No really... it's supposed to smoke.

Yeah, I was -3 in 1971 but it still brings about nostalgia. I heard about the part II... not as good? I'll probably
still have to check it out. If for nothing else than to see the bikes!

Hey MadBuffalo,

I just got off the phone with Mert Lawwill

Was having problems ordering the movie and a shirt off his website and so called the number listed on the contact page...
It's his actual cell phone #! :ssh:

I'm star struck... the guy was a world class motorcycle racer and got to hang out with Steve McQueen to boot!

Here's another one from back in the day...also available on Netflix also:

"Cycles South".

Kinda the same flavor, but not so "professionally" done. More from the "Local Yokel" view point, but still fun to watch, especially if ya need a 2-wheel fix on a crappy day.

I watched that one too, it was a lot of fun and I just couldn't imagine anyone doing anything like that these days.
Can't believe they traded in those bikes for smaller Kawasakis! I tried looking those guys up in Google and got
absolutely nowhere. I wonder what they're doing now...
