Goodness gracious, someone please help with my paint dilema

Im having a hell of a time finding a paint for candy gold. A few guys suggest RSbikepaints but they use a water born lacquer. My painter is a trusted friend whos family has been painting cars for a very long time and they have never heard of a water born lacquer. Nor have any other well experienced and trusted painters in my area. Therefore my painter doesnt trust its durability or longevity. I can not find any paint with the candy gold, by using code 288. Can anyone please help in any way ? My friend told me if someone has this color they could easily take a side panel to any automotive paint store and have the part electronicly scanned to retrieve a paint formula. If someone is so kind to help me. The deed will be rewarded.

The early Honda CB750s were available in a candy gold. Not sure the shade is the same but that paint is available from Marble Motors:

I knew that and forgot. I think those colors are slightly different. But, I'll check further into it. Thank you, for the lead. Suggestion and option.

Candy is a way different story and you were not able to get a recipe by scanning. When keeping it simple, candy paint is tinted clear coats applied to metallic base coat with small to large metallic flakes. The final color and darkness of the finish depends on the color and darkness of the basecoat, the amount of tint in the candy coat, and the number of candy coats applied.

Thats the way I was thinking. Are you saying the scan will not give me a close enough recipe? As depending on the light situation at the time a part for example is scanned. It will give me only a recipe for the color at that moment. Where as only the tints will give me the desired changing of various gold colors. I understand how candies work. But, are you saying I won't achieve an accurate final color from a scan ?

I had the same problem when painting my Kawasaki H1 500 green. Scanning does not work. All our local painters (in western Canada) has converted to water based paints. I had the same problem with the water borne lacquers samples from the UK. I purchased several side covers and tanks off EBay in an attempt to get a good original color example. What I discovered was even the original paint was different (from the factory). Depending on the quality of the factory spray the color varied. In the end I gave the paint job to a guy who had been in the biz for 30 years and with some trial and error we finally came upon a formula to paint the Kawasaki. It was a long drawn out process. Once I got the bike put together I took it to a show & shine and one of the first comments I heard was: "nice paint but the color is wrong"! Seriously, that guy almost got a cup of hot coffee in his face. Now I take a much more relaxed approach. I do my best to get a nice color match but I don't lose any sleep if its not perfect because it never was perfect even from the factory. Do what looks nice for you and don't be upset by any sidewalk experts that take 5 seconds to look at your bike and declare it 'not correct'. My 2cents worth.

Is variance gold and yellow color changes that the original candy gold presents. Thats the least I hope for. I appreciate the scanning details. I think Im gonna insist to my friend. To go with Rsbikepaints. Thats a little difficult too. As he wants a good paint on my bike. For both of our sakes. What problem did you have with the water based samples ?

Never imagined, the headache the paint job would be. Uughh.

I started with a sample from RSBikePaints but in the end my painter used a different supplier. The supplier was called SEM and they are in the USA. They do candy colors. My painter did some mixing with a white pearl to get the final tone. My painter also suggested House of Colors if SEM doesn't work out.

If you are not after a spot on match then I again recommend the Honda candy gold. I have seen a CB750 painted in this color by Marbles Motors and the bike was beautiful. They usually show up at Barber's Vintage Days and display examples of their work. I was very tempted to paint my CB750 gold after seeing their work but ultimately decided on the candy ruby red. Also I believe Marbles Motors will paint your body set.
I have no connection with them other than seeing examples of their outstanding work.

Im seriously considering that as one of my two options. I've ruled out RSbikepaints. After a lot of scurrying on the net I found out the deal with the water born lacquer. Supposedly, sometime in June legislation was passed to ban all urethane paints. Leading to this dilemma. Many companies have started the transition.

Hey, Frank. I can't back out on my buddy in order to use Marble. But, Im considering their paint. How long ago did your friend have them painted. And has the paint seen any elements? Direct sun light, heat, cold, etc?

His bike was painted in Sep 2012 and has yet to see any of the element because it sits in the garage unfinished.

That ruby red is beautiful. What was his cost. Paint and labor. Ask him cost on paint alone. Appreciate it.
