Front and rear mag wheels for 74 GT750

Post by 2stroketony »

Hello gents,

Would you remind me which years and models of GS bike mag wheels fit the front and rear of the GT 750's?

Would like to keep it simple and stick with the drum rear brake and original forks and calipers up front.

Thanks,

Tony,
I've just been going through this conversion myself. The challenge will be to find an 18" GS rear wheel with a drum brake. I believe the GS550 has one, but I read somewhere that the axle is a different size than the GT750.
I thought I'd hit the jackpot when I discovered that the budget model GS750T (1982/83) has a drum brake rear. However, the wheel is 17". I have one of these in fair condition if you are interested.
I decided to stick with 18" GS750 wheel on the rear so I am going with the disc brake conversion.

The front is another story. I used a GS750 front wheel. The GS front wheel is 19", but the GS brake rotors are slightly smaller in diameter than the GT rotors. If you want to keep the GS rotors you may want to consider switching out your forks (the GS forks have rear-mounted calipers). I went for the "budget" option so I switched out the GS rotors and put the GT rotors on and everything fits beautifully.

Ring Ding, can you post a pic or 2 of the exhaust on your bike? They caught my eye in the wheel pic. Is that a 3 into1??

Hey Ring Ding,

I finished the mag wheel from Gs model fiasco.

I used a rear from a GS750T
Had to use a spacer about 1/10th of an inch thick between brake backing plate and hub.
Used the same brake shoes as the original GT750
Used the GT backing plate
Removed part of the weld on the left inside of swing are to avoid tire rubbing
Used the GT axle spacer

Used a front wheel off of a 1982 GS450
Used original discs from GT
Used a front fender from an unknown model (Tried about 3 different ones)

Improved the handling as the rear was somewhat lowered and pushed the front end out a few degrees
Looks much more modern as Suzuki should have made them back when

Photos to follow later today

Thanks,

Tony

Hey Ring Ding

Here is a photo.

How do we apply a photo to the text block like you did?

I had a tough time just compressing the photo below the 750 kb.

Tony, it just occurred to me where I'd seen the picture of your two beauties before! Here is a view of my GS rear wheel setup with fully operational rear disc:
